01

Before the car moves

Your instructor begins by learning about you. They may ask whether you have driven before, what makes you nervous and what you hope to achieve. This conversation helps them choose the right pace for the lesson.

You will then complete a simple safety routine: adjusting the seat, head restraint and mirrors; fastening your seat belt; identifying the main controls; and checking that the doors are secure. These steps may feel slow, but they establish a repeatable routine for every journey.

02

Learning the controls

In a manual car, the instructor explains the clutch, brake, accelerator and gear pattern before introducing clutch control. In an automatic car, the focus is on selecting the correct gear, controlling the brake and using smooth accelerator pressure.

You will also locate the indicators, handbrake, lights, wipers and dashboard warning lights. Ask your instructor to repeat anything that is unfamiliar. Clear understanding is more important than rushing ahead.

03

Your first controlled movement

The first drive normally happens in a quiet, suitable training area. Your instructor will guide you through observing your surroundings, signalling when necessary, moving away smoothly and stopping under control.

Expect short cycles of explanation, practice and feedback. If the engine stalls or the stop is not smooth, that is useful information—not failure. The instructor will help you identify what happened and try again with one adjustment.

  • Look where you want the vehicle to go, not down at the controls.
  • Use gentle inputs and give yourself time to think.
  • Say when you do not understand an instruction.
  • Finish each exercise by securing the vehicle correctly.

How to prepare

Wear comfortable, secure footwear and bring any documents your branch requested. Avoid arriving hungry, exhausted or in a rush. A few minutes of calm preparation makes it easier to absorb new information.

After the lesson, write down two things that improved and one thing to practise next time. Progress becomes much easier to see when each lesson has a clear focus.

Practise with professional guidance.

Reading builds understanding; supervised training turns it into safe, repeatable driving behaviour.
