1. Check the vehicle and surroundings
As you approach, look for people, animals, low obstacles, tyre problems, leaks or visible damage. Confirm that the space around the vehicle is clear—especially areas that may disappear from view once you sit down.
2. Set your driving position
Adjust the seat so you can operate every pedal fully without stretching. Set the head restraint, fasten your seat belt and ask passengers to do the same. You should be comfortable while remaining alert and well supported.
3. Set mirrors and identify controls
Adjust mirrors after the seat, because changing your seating position changes what the mirrors show. Locate the indicators, lights, wipers and demister before you need them. Check the dashboard for warning lights after starting the vehicle.
4. Secure and prepare the vehicle
Confirm the handbrake is applied and select neutral or the appropriate automatic position before starting. Once ready to move, select the correct gear and prepare the vehicle without rushing.
5. Observe, signal and move only when safe
Check mirrors and blind spots, look in the direction of travel and signal if another road user will benefit. Move only when the gap is sufficient and you can join the road without forcing someone else to brake or change direction.
